Curtailment cost at a reference price

What it measures

What curtailed German renewable energy would have cost to compensate, at one reference rate applied to the curtailed volumes the grid operators report.

Inputs

  • Redispatch records from netztransparenz.de, the German grid operators' joint data site, for German renewable plants told to turn output down, in megawatt-hours
  • A reference compensation rate, stated in the data file and on the view

Method and weighting

Curtailment is wind and solar switched off because the grid cannot carry the power it would generate; redispatch is the grid operator paying a plant to turn down on one side of a congested line and up on the other. The curtailed energy for a day is the total volume of redispatch measures that reduce feed-in from a renewable plant, summed for that day.

The cost is that curtailed volume multiplied by a reference compensation rate, a single figure stated in the data file and on the view standing in for the range of rates plants are paid.

Window

The two years to the latest day the redispatch records cover, refreshed on the 1st and 15th of each month. The current window runs from to . Data last refreshed on .

Known limits

  • Real compensation varies by plant and year, so this figure is an order-of-magnitude proxy for the billed amount.
  • The redispatch records give the volume of energy curtailed and leave out the compensation paid.
