Electricity's share of final energy

What it measures

The share of a country's final energy consumption that is electricity, from Eurostat's energy balances, and its change over the span stated on the view.

Inputs

  • Eurostat's complete energy balances: final energy consumption for energy use, all products and electricity alone, per country and year, in thousand tonnes of oil equivalent

Method and weighting

Final energy consumption for energy use is what homes, businesses and transport use once the power sector's own use and its losses are taken out. The share is electricity divided by all products for the same country and year; the unit cancels. The change is the share in a year minus the share in the year the configured span earlier, in percentage points, shown only where both ends are reported.

A year with either figure missing, or a total of zero, has no share. The European Union aggregate is drawn as a reference line and left out of the ranking.

The readings under the charts carry one figure per position, filled from the same data for the country chosen, and settle nothing.

Window

Calendar years from the first year stated on the view to the latest year Eurostat has published, refreshed on the 1st and 15th of each month; Eurostat publishes the balances yearly, so the latest year moves once a year. The current window runs from to . Data last refreshed on .

Known limits

  • Final energy is counted where it is consumed; the energy embodied in imported goods is counted in the country that made them.
  • A country that stops reporting to Eurostat ends its series; the United Kingdom's record ends with its last reported year.
  • Thousand tonnes of oil equivalent weigh a unit of electricity and a unit of fuel alike, so the share is a share of energy content; the useful work electricity delivers per unit is higher, which this share leaves out.
