Each control area's share of wind and solar

What it measures

Each control area's share of Germany's wind and solar output, by day and by hour of the day. A control area is the region one grid operator balances.

Inputs

  • SMARD's (the Bundesnetzagentur's market-data platform) quarter-hour realised generation for wind onshore, wind offshore and solar, per German control area

Method and weighting

Each day, SMARD's quarter-hour realised generation for a control area and fuel is averaged into a daily mean in gigawatts, by local day. The wind onshore and wind offshore readings are summed into a combined wind figure first, on the original quarter-hour data, before that daily average is taken. An area's daily share is its mean divided by the sum over every area that reported that fuel that day. An area with no reading is left out of both. The same quarter-hour data is also grouped by local hour of day and by month, to give the hour-of-day profile the page shows alongside it.

Window

The rolling 12 months to the last complete day, refreshed on the 1st and 15th of each month. The current window runs from to . Data last refreshed on .

Known limits

  • The four control areas are drawn by the grid operators; German state boundaries play no part in them.
  • A day with an area missing reports a share of only the areas that did report.
