Method note · measured
The battery fleet from the register
What it measures
The battery fleet the Bundesnetzagentur's (Germany's energy regulator) register lists, summed by commissioning month and its usable-energy segment.
Inputs
- Battery units in the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR), Germany's register of power plants, matched to their plant records for usable energy, from the regulator's open export as downloaded on the date stated on the view
Method and weighting
Battery units carry the register's battery label. Each unit's record (its power) is joined to its plant record (its usable energy) by the plant's registry number. A unit is placed into a segment by that usable energy, against the thresholds stated on the view for a home system, a commercial-and-industrial system and a large-scale system; a unit with no usable energy on record is placed by its power multiplied by an assumed one-hour duration.
Power and energy are summed by commissioning month for every unit that has gone live. A battery decommissioned since still counts in the month it went live. The fleet operating at each year end is every unit commissioned on or before that date and still operating; a unit with no commissioning date on record cannot be placed in any earlier year, so it is counted only in the latest year, on the reasoning that it exists now. The most recent months are marked provisional, because operators have a period after commissioning to register and the count for those months keeps rising as filings arrive.

Known limits
- A unit sized by its power for the assumed one-hour duration can land in the wrong segment.
