The commercial battery class by district

What it measures

Battery units in the register's middle size class, summed per district in power, usable energy and count; the class bounds are stated on the view.

Inputs

  • Battery units in the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR), Germany's register of power plants, matched to their plant records for usable energy, from the regulator's open export as downloaded on the date stated on the view
  • The size class bounds and the aggregation level from the pipeline's commercial-storage parameter file, shown on the view
  • The district crosswalk from the municipality key to the Eurostat district code, and the district basemap for names

Method and weighting

Battery units carry the register's battery label; units of every other storage technology are dropped, as are units planned or shut down. Each unit's record (its power) is joined to its plant record (its usable energy) by the plant's registry number. A unit is in the class when its usable energy lies above the lower bound and at or below the upper bound stated on the view; a unit with no usable energy on record is counted as unclassified and left out of the class.

Each unit's district is the first five digits of its municipality key, mapped to the Eurostat district code the basemap uses. Power, usable energy and unit count are summed per district; power stays in kilowatts and energy in kilowatt-hours, because the class is defined in those units. The register withholds coordinates for units below a stated power, which covers most of the class, so the district is the finest level the map shows. Commissioning is also summed by calendar year; the newest months are marked provisional, because operators have a period after commissioning to register and those months keep rising as filings arrive.

Known limits

  • The class is a size convention, so it stands on its own: another country's class has different bounds and a different measure.
  • A district with no unit in the class is shown as no data, which the map keeps apart from a low value.
