Residual load

What it measures

Residual load is what is left of demand once wind and solar generation for the hour is taken out, the load other plants and batteries still have to cover.

Inputs

  • ENTSO-E actual total load for the bidding zone selected on the view, hourly
  • ENTSO-E actual generation for wind onshore, wind offshore and solar in the same zone, hourly

Method and weighting

Residual load for an hour is the zone's total demand minus its wind and solar generation in that same hour, both read from the canonical hourly grid. Wind and solar are summed together and clipped so a negative reading from the source feed counts as none, before the two series are subtracted. When every one of the three renewable series is missing for an hour, that hour is left missing too. Residual load can fall below zero when wind and solar together exceed demand; that value is kept as it is.

Known limits

  • Residual load is a national balance; it says nothing about where inside the zone the demand or the generation sits.
  • Imports and exports across the border are not netted out of demand or generation before the subtraction is made.
