Method note · measured
The wholesale-to-retail wedge
What it measures
The gap between the wholesale price and a household bill, broken into energy, network, and tax and levy components, in ct/kWh.
Inputs
- Eurostat's household electricity price components (dataset nrg_pc_204_c) for the standard household consumption band stated on the view, annual, for the countries the view offers
Method and weighting
The wholesale-to-retail wedge reads Eurostat's household electricity price components for that consumption band: energy and supply, network costs, and taxes, fees and levies, each in ct/kWh.
Each country and year is kept only when Eurostat reports its energy and supply component.
The total for that year is the sum of whichever components are present. A component Eurostat leaves blank for a country and year stays absent from the total.
Window
Eurostat's annual household price components from the first year shown on the view, up to the latest year Eurostat has published. Data last refreshed on .
Known limits
- The bill is in ct/kWh and the wholesale price in €/MWh: one euro per megawatt-hour is a tenth of a cent per kilowatt-hour.
- The consumption band stands in for a household; an actual bill can differ from it.
- The figures are annual, so a wholesale-price swing during the year only shows up once the year closes.
