Charging Network: where Germany's charge points are

How many public charge points does Germany have, who runs them, and where are they?

On 1 September 2026 the register of Germany's grid regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur, listed 209 098 public charge points across 116 423 stations, together about 9.1 GW of simultaneous rated power. The register holds the points whose operators have completed their notification to the regulator.

The regulator's own count, which also includes notifications still being processed, was 214 334 on 1 September 2026; the register held 209 098 that day.

Fast charging above 22 kW accounts for 54 297 of those points, roughly 26%; the rest are normal points at 22 kW or below.

The largest operator is EnBW with 12 172 points, and the network leans west and south: Nordrhein-Westfalen alone holds 41 203.

The EU had 1 159 838 public recharging points in the third quarter of 2026 so far, by the count of EAFO, the European Commission's alternative-fuels observatory, up from 882 012 in the fourth quarter of 2024. Of these, 19% charge from direct current, the type fast chargers use.

The network is concentrated: the Netherlands, Germany and France together host 57% of all EU points.

Lorries and buses (heavy-duty vehicles) have 2 671 public points in 17 countries in the third quarter of 2026 so far, 719 of them at sites for heavy vehicles only.

The EU's charging-infrastructure law (AFIR) requires fast-charging sites every 60 km along the EU's core road network (TEN-T), with coverage for lorries and buses complete by 2030.
